Spring into Summer

Local level event

What does this mean?

Local events are usually low key and in the 'localised' area, ideal for newcomers to try the sport and Training events are non competitive and used for training and coaching, aimed at members of the club, but they can attract people from neighbouring clubs, and are often ideal for newcomers to try the sport. Regional events attract participants from around the local Region, National events are high quality competitions that will attract people from far away, Major events are Major Events such as a British Championships. Virtual events are where there are no physical controls being used. Your presence at a control is registered using an App on your mobile phone, normally the free MapRun6 App.

Map / Terrain

A hard copy print out of the map will be provided to you at the event. The map has been prepared using the Open Orienteering Map software. On the map you will find there are 3 bridges across the main A102 Blackwall Tunnel approach road which are marked as crossing points. You are not allowed to cross the A102 at any other place and this is indicated by x's being added to the map (not that we think anyone would wish to try to cross that road!). Other than this, it is the runners responsibility to cross roads carefully. Most of the residential roads are reasonably quiet, particularly the ones by the river. Other roads have plenty of safe crossing points.

Course Information

Juniors who are under 16 on the day of the event can only participate if accompanied by an adult on the night.

Course: 1-hour score course which means the controls can be visited in any order.  The idea is to score as many points as possible in 60 minutes (controls beginning with 1 score 10, 2 score 20, 3 score 30 etc) with a 30 point penalty for every minute or part minute that you are late back to the finish. The skill is in deciding which control to visit without being late back so it is all about route choice.
