What does this mean?

Local events are usually low key and in the 'localised' area, ideal for newcomers to try the sport and Training events are non competitive and used for training and coaching, aimed at members of the club, but they can attract people from neighbouring clubs, and are often ideal for newcomers to try the sport. Regional events attract participants from around the local Region, National events are high quality competitions that will attract people from far away, Major events are Major Events such as a British Championships. Virtual events are where there are no physical controls being used. Your presence at a control is registered using an App on your mobile phone, normally the free MapRun6 App.

Directions / Parking

Event Centre
Star Primary School (W3W: employ.option.dust) will be used as our assembly centre for this event. It is an open room in the auditorium which is in the playground, not the main building. There are toilets and space to store baggage if required. The entrance for competitors is on Star Lane, London E16 4NH.
Getting to Canning Town
We are encouraging all competitors to make use of the excellent public transport network. The event centre is less than 2 minutes from Star Lane DLR station. Canning Town station itself (Jubilee Line and DLR) is a 17-minute walk away or use the 323 bus which stops outside Star Lane Station. There will be limited, on-street parking in surrounding residential roads, but please be considerate towards residents. There is no parking at the event centre for competitors.
For competitors coming from further afield, the closest airport is London City Airport, and Stratford with its multitude of connecting services is only 5 minutes direct on the DLR. There are unlimited accommodation options in the capital, including in Canning Town itself.

Event Area
Canning Town offers urban orienteering in a high residential density location, with plenty of route choice. There will be a few controls in some urban parks, with most control sites being attached to the usual street furniture and trees. The longer courses will cross the Barking Road and the A13 (which will be marked as OOB. Junior courses will be based mainly in Star Park and the school grounds with some controls in a traffic- calmed 20MPH residential area. There is one mandatory crossing point which will be marshalled between 10.30 and 11.30am only so please enter as appropriate for this time.
There is no strict embargo on the event area. If you enter the competition area prior to the event, you will still be competitive. However, to ensure the fairness of the competition, please do not do any form of orienteering within the competition area until the event.

Map
Map has been newly drawn by Andrew Evans, Richard Bostock and Luke Bennett over the last few months to ISSprOM 2019-2 specification, printed by BML Print. Competitors should be aware of the latest urban map symbols.

Please take notice of the OOB symbols. You are not permitted to cross these and will be disqualified if seen crossing any of them. We will have marshals on the course!
Please also note that a dot will be used to mark a lamppost with a control on. Not all lampposts have been mapped.
There will be no legend on the map, so please take note of this now (see photo gallery).

There are some extracts from the Canning Town map in the photo gallery, which show the intricacies of the area. We hope you enjoy navigating through this traditional East End area!

Safety Notes

Behaviour and etiquette
Canning Town is a densely populated area and you will encounter pedestrians, cyclists and dog walkers on your run. Please be respectful at all times and give way to the local residents. Canning Town is a fantastic place for an urban event and any anti-social behaviour will jeopardise our ability to host an event here again.

We have carried out an extensive risk assessment however please be aware that when you are running, your safety is your responsibility. A first aid kit will be available at the event centre with a first-aid trained club member in attendance at the Event Centre. Please do not attend the event if you or a member of your household has COVID-19 symptoms. You must adhere to the British Orienteering Participant Code of Conduct.
