Thank you to all those attending tonight’s event. The course seemed to have provided an appropriate challenge and there were many complementary comments.

Thanks to Maidstone Borough Council for allowing us to use their parking and to Andrew, Mark and Rowan for their assistance in collecting controls.

There was one item of lost property, a blue jacket. If this is yours then email me (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) and I will try and get it back to you.

Next week’s KNC event is at Angley Wood, Cranbrook and details are available on the SAXONS website.

AGM 2021

This year's AGM and dinner will be held at The Royal Victoria and Bull Hotel, 1 High St, Dartford, DA1 1DU on Wednesday 13th October. Please let David Dawson know if you will be coming and how many guests. The agenda may be found here.

Crystal Palace Park Race, 16 July to 31 July

The sixth of our Summer Park Races takes us to Crystal Palace Park in South London, courtesy of DFOK. Once again, we have two courses for you to choose from, "Long" (around 5km direct line) and "Short" (around 2.5km). To count for the series results, you can do this race anytime between Friday 16 July and Saturday 31 July.

On 26th July they have started to erect a fence around the concert bowl.  This obstructs access to controls 15 and 16.  Follow the fence around and get as close as possible, but you will not get a ping.  On completion you can use the function on Maprun to expand the radius until the control shows up.

The park is ideal for orienteering. It is very runnable but with plenty of complexity and interesting Victorian features. The courses avoid any undergrowth so running in shorts should be fine. The courses do cross roads within the park with traffic approaching the parking areas.  Some parts can be busy with other park users, especially around the dinosaurs.

Please continue to respect the latest Coronavirus restrictions when taking part in this event, and please be courteous to other park users when out on your course.

The start and finish are beside Crystal Palace Park station at homes.toast.yours.  It is 12 minutes walk from Penge West Station or 20 from Penge East.  No tubes in this part of South London, but plenty of buses to Crystal Palace Parade.  There is (free) car parking close to the start on the approach road to the National Sports Centre.  There is a food and drinks booth at the start.

There are toilets 8 minutes from the start in the park at invest.face.handle near the cafe which sells snacks and refreshments from 8:30 to 5:30.

There will be two courses of 5.0km and 2.5km straight-line distance respectively. These are linear courses, which means you need to find the controls in order and the fastest person to do so wins.

As previously, we’ll be using the MapRunF timing app, which also means that you can do the challenge anytime you like between Friday 16 July and Saturday 31 July.

Technical details

If you haven’t already, please install MapRun6 on your phone. The previous MapRunF can still be used; the two Apps run in parallel but the newer MapRun6 has a more accurate GPS capability so is preferable. Download your selected course from Maprun folder: UK > South East London >Bromley > Crystal Palace Park Race Series 2021 (Long or Short) PXAC.  Make sure you select the correct file.  If you’d like to run with a Garmin watch instead of your phone, follow these instructions as well.

Next, download and print the race map (you will need this to navigate). Here is the Long Map and here is the Short Map. Both text and IOF symbol control descriptions are on the map or you can download them here.

Note that (as usual), North is at the top of the map when printed and due to lack of space, the map has limited legend but you can see an explanation of symbols here.

Once you’re ready to go, press ‘Go To Start’ (there is no code required) and the App or watch will start automatically when you’re at the start location. The App will record each control (pinging each time) and then stops your time when you are at the finish.

Your result should be uploaded automatically, but you may need to ‘Get Track from Garmin’ if you’re using MapRunG.

All competitors take part at their own risk.

Enjoy the challenge! If you have any questions, just ask the organiser This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
