I hope you enjoyed the event. The south east seems to have a proliferation of informal events at the moment. Mass start score events seem to suit them well as it gives everyone a chance to chat before/after the event. Also we had plenty of time before the event to do some basic skills training with the juniors, and plenty of time during the score event to talk to newcomers try the yellow course.
The main drawback to the score format is that it doesn’t make it easy for the planner to set a specific challenge on a leg – as is the case on a standard cross country course. This is why I tried the dumbbell format described in CompassSport. I wanted each dumbbell to help you practice a specific skill. If you are a new orienteer, why not look back at your course and see where you used/could have used (eg attack points, contouring and aiming off)?
The area gives limited technical challenge (for the experienced orienteer) in summer – but a good physical one. The dumbbell format also allowed me to create a long course out of a small area by using a few long dumbbells. I wondered if Nick would get them all. Not quite, but we had to put one of the controls on the wrong path junction to send him into penalty point territory. Sorry about that!
This was my first event using Purple Pen, the free course drawing software. I didn’t think it had the ability to join up dumbbells, but Jerry tells me this can be done, so I’ll try this next time. Also next time I’ll move the numbers so that they don’t overprint so many features.
Once upon a time orienteering used to stop in July and August, but this year the calendar is full of small events. DFOK are joining in the fun with 3 extra Thursday evening events in August (Shooters Hill and Bostall Heath). In case you don’t know, the best place to see the full list of events in the south east is the south east orienteering website www.seoa.org.uk.
Finally I have plenty of people to thank. Biggest thanks to Andy Elliot who planned the yellow course and checked the control sites for the score. Thanks also to lots of DFOK members who helped in various ways: Neil Speers, Phil Basford, John Lewis, Dave Cave, David Dawson, Steve Brockbank and Paul Oates. Thanks also to those who helped collect controls and to Nick who helped publicise the event with SO and SLOW.
