Orienteering events normally take place throughout the year at weekends when special courses are laid out for competitors, but these are taken in at the end of the competition. A Permanent Orienteering Course (POC) is usually laid out in co-operation with the woodland owner, and around here, that usually means the local Councils, the Woodland Trust, National Trust or Forestry Commission. These are co-ordinated by Dartford Orienteering Klubb, who produce the maps. The land owner puts in special posts to mark the permanent sites. This means that you may use the courses at any time as the posts are permanently in place.
You may print the POC map and the POC leaflet. There are usually three recommended courses of varying length and degree of difficulty within the leaflet. Short, Medium and Longer.
The degree of difficulty does vary depending on the map and the terrain. Most of DFOK’s POCs are in well established country parks and therefore none of them are overly difficult. However, there is nothing to stop you planning your own course from the map provided.
