Guide to event types

Local Events

The Kent Orienteering League (KOL)
Formerly known as the Saturday Series these events are designed to cater for orienteers of all ages and abilities. There are 3 separate courses graded by length and difficulty. There are prizes in each category at the end of the season. These events are organised jointly by DFOK and Saxons. You can find out all the latest news, results and league tables for the KOL here.

Frolics Series
Part of a series of summer local events in the South East where everybody runs a course of a light green standard (relatively easy). Each competitor is given a handicap depending on age and experience. From the overall results after handicaps have been taken into account, each club's best 6 results count in the team competition. The best club over the Frolics series wins the Frolics Trophy.

District Events

Used to be called Colour Coded Events. The most common type of event usually held on a Sunday. District events have courses for all ages and orienteering abilities. Most events will have about 7 courses of varying length and technical difficulty which are 'colour coded'. White (very easy for the young beginner) to Brown (for the experienced physically fit Orienteer). DFOK District events generally attract between 120 and 180 or so people.

Regional Events

Used to be called Badge Events. Regional events are less common, but higher quality, than district events. Regional events generally attract around 500 competitors and offer courses for experienced Orienteer based on the BOF age class system. There are long and short courses for M/W20+ and 'A' and 'B' courses for the junior classes (short is just as technically difficult but shorter than long, 'B' is technically easier and shorter than 'A'). Pre-entry is generally required as the maps have courses overprinted onto them. You may enter even if you are not a member of BOF but you will have to pay a premium and your results will not count towards the National Ranking List. A limited number of colour coded courses are always provided at Regional events for less experienced orienteers.

Klubb Events

Sometimes social, sometimes training, sometimes relays or other o- competitions where we compete as a team, sometimes not orienteering at all!.

Klubb Open Meeting These are DFOK's "committee" meetings but they're open to all.

London Marathon DFOK provide race officials to marshal part of the route of the London Marathon. Once a year we look for volunteers to help marshal the route in Woolwich. It's a good social opportunity outside the normal Orienteering environment.

Miscellaneous Event Descriptions

Score Event In score orienteering, instead of having to find your way round a particular set of controls in a defined order in as short a time as possible, you have to visit as many controls as you can, in any order you like, in a fixed time. Some controls will score more points than others, depending on how far away or how difficult they are. There will be penalty points if you go over your allotted time. The person with the most points wins.
