October 2020 Challenge: Plumstead Common & Shrewsbury Park

Where: Start and Finish for all courses are in Shrewsbury Park. The junior course is entirely within the park with no roads to cross. The senior courses visit Plumstead Common and other green spaces.

Parking: At Shrewsbury Park car park, off Plum Lane SE18, ///mild.cheat.liner. Parking is on hard standing, plentiful and free but the entrance to the car park is narrow and an awkward turn. If too difficult then there are plenty of spaces in Plum Lane to the N of the car park entrance. Shrewsbury Park has no toilets or refreshments. These are available at Oxleas woods.

The car park closes at 5pm.

When: Any time until midnight on 31 October. Start at any time you choose.

There is a choice of three Line courses where the controls have to be taken in order.
A junior course (1.7k) with 11 controls. Print the map

A short course (4.3k) with 8 controls. Print the map
A long course (6.7k) with 13 controls. Print the map

There is no time limit for completing any course.

The App uses an OpenOrienteeringMap for the two longer courses which is not recommended as your map for this activity. The junior course uses the DFOK map for Shrewsbury Park. Look at this map for the exact location of the start.

Download the App MapRunF to your mobile phone then within the App, go to Select Event then scroll down to UK, then London South East and the Greenwich folder. The events are PlumsteadCommon Long PXAC, PlumsteadCommon Short PXAC and ShrewsburyPark Junior PXAC. Click here for Guidance on how to use the App

Control descriptions are printed are on each map. On the Long Course map the symbol O is a postbox but other symbols are standard. Other maps use text descriptions.

The junior course may be nearer orange than yellow standard. There are opportunities to take straight line routes on most legs and these could be used for practice on taking bearings.

In line with current Government guidance, ensure social distancing is maintained at all times, including with members of the public and participate in accordance with those guidelines.

This Challenge is not an organised event or activity, so you are not covered by British Orienteering's insurance. You do the Challenge as an individual for personal training and you are responsible for both your own safety and the safety of others around you.

Results: these will be available in early November.
